Braemar Castle Aug 2010 (142)

Our Address:  Braemar, Ballater AB35 5XR

Aberdeen - 59 miles; Perth - 50 miles; Dundee – 52 miles; Inverness - 78 miles

By Car: Braemar Castle is situated a quarter of a mile east of Braemar on a sweeping bend on the A93.  As you approach the village from the Aberdeen direction, the car park is beyond the castle.  Approaching from Perth, travel past the village heading for Aberdeen, the car park is just beyond the graveyard, before the castle.

The castle is a pleasant walk from the centre of the village .  A stroll past the Invercauld Arms Hotel (the 1715 Jacobite uprising began here) and past the graveyard where the oldest Jacobite and generations of the Farquharson family are buried, takes you to the entrance to the Castle.

By Bus:  A  regular bus service (201) runs between Aberdeen and Braemar (59 miles).  Timetables and more info at Stagecoach Bluebird

Driving from the south, Braemar is the first of the north-east castles you will encounter on the "Castle Trail" .

Balmoral Castle is 9 miles east on the A93 Aberdeen road.

By Air:  Aberdeen (59 miles away) is the nearest airports with direct flights from Amsterdam, Belfast, Bergen, Bristol, Cardiff, Copenhagen, Dublin, Durham, East Midlands, Esbjerg, Exeter, Frankfurt, Groningen, Humberside, Kirkwall, Leeds/Bradford, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Paris, Shetland, Southampton, Stavanger, Stornoway, Wick

The Car Park is situated adjacent to the castle, with a short walk through the trees to reach the castle itself.
There is NO CHARGE for patrons using the Car Park.

(If you have mobility difficulties, you are welcome to bring your car up the driveway and park at the castle)

Visitors with a physical disability are welcome to bring their car up to the castle and to park outside. The courtyard and exhibition in the cabin are fully accessible to those using wheelchairs, although there is a very small step into the courtyard which may be unsuitable for electric wheelchairs.

Inside the castle, the ground floor (the eighteenth century kitchen, the laird's pit and the gift shop) is accessed by going down two steps. Access to the first floor is by either the spiral staircase or the servants' stairs, which has a solid bannister.  Any visitors who feel that they may not be able to take a tour of the whole castle are very welcome to visit the first floor free of charge and a guide may be available to give a brief overview of the castle's history in those two rooms. We want everyone to be able to enjoy as much of this historic building as possible.

Audio tours are available and headphones can be provided, or visitors are welcome to use their own.  Written information about the castle is available in large print.
